Fight the Good Fight of Faith

Football for the kiddos is on the horizon.  It was time for me to ready our equipment for issue in August.  Last Thursday, I met up with 8th grade head coach who has followed his team since 2nd grade.  After we finished our work, we were shooting the breeze outside the equipment shed.

He started talking about inflation and mentioned he cannot wait we get the real president back in office.  Which of course led into a discussion about politics.

Spoiler alert: the purpose of this article is not about politics.

We went back and forth about Economics 101, which touched base on economic cycles of prosperity and downturns.  Much of the economic outcome has little to do with what the president is doing and more so to do with other political and economic factors.

We talked about the Big Lie and Fake News.  Lastly, we talked about the moral failure and our democracy at risk on 1/6/21.

Here is where the point of the article takes shape.

The coach said to me he does not care about 1/6/21, climate greenhouse effect, or . . . The Constitution in jeopardy.  All he cared about is what’s in it for him in the here and now with his wallet, and things were financially good when the previous president was in office. So, bring him back, nothing he has done or will do matters.  He said this even after admitting the former president had some serious shortcomings.

“He was good for my wallet, nothing else matters” was the actual comment from this man who is self-employed.

Sadly, this statement tells me we have come to a point in our society that the love of money overrides anything else including democracy and The Constitution.

I could easily reference, 1 Timothy 6:10, “The love of money is the root of all evil”; however, I am going reference this passage with context.

Here is the context, 1 Timothy 6:8-12

8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness.

12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Our responsibility to God and men is to serve the interest of Christ and do good to others.  Money idolatry and materialism cannot steer us away from our faith focus.  We cannot lose our moral compass because of riches and politics.

I suspect nothing will come of the 1/6/21 investigation hearings.  I am more concerned about the country moving towards a selfish tone as the rich get richer and poor get poorer.  The rich hold positions of power in and out of Washington.

To defeat the evilness of money idolatry, we need to continue to fight the good fight of faith.
