Summer Time Sunday at the Loop

!!!WE INTERRUPT TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT TO BRING YOU THIS BREAKING NEWS!!!!

Summer is drawing nigh, but we are not ready to release it yet.

For many years, I have listened to recount her Sunday activities after church.  Jo will paint a story of her days as a teen in Chicago getting ready for an evening of South Style roller skating.  Jo would gather her coinage and bills for the price of admission.  If resources were low, she would soft talk her dad for the money.

Jo’s destination was the “Loop Disco Roller Rink” on 95th Street.  When she arrived at the rink she was in her element.  The rink was an amazing world of graceful, stylistic, and showmanship  skating.

Every Sunday, Jo connected with her group of girlfriends who were not on punishment. Typically, Chucky chauffeuring the group to the rink.  The fun would start at 2 PM and end at 10 PM.

The girls would find the guys who were best skaters and skate with them.  Only problem was some of the guys were a tad ripe from doing all skating gymnastic to attract girls.  A prerequisite for a good skater to be able to perform a “Big Wheel”, 720 plus, a decent dip on one skate.  Jo did not want to skate with boys who were unskilled——-they’re too slow, but smelled good.  Jo came to skate and not waltz.

During “Men’s Skate Only”, the girls would watch the boys perform peacocks trying to impress the ladies.  In 80’s, Cyndi Lauper sang a song titled, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”.  Such was the case during Men’s Skate Only.  The only thing the girls were interested in at this time was to sneak on to the floor and orbit around a few times.  The DJ always played the best songs during Men’s Skate Only.  Sadly, many times they were ushered off the floor.  Still a lot of fun.

After the rink closed, the was group was famished.  They would head over to the market place in Jewtown, a colloquial name for an area in Chicago’s near west side close to Maxwell Street and Hallstead.  Their mission was to get some polish sausages with all the fixings.  It was good eating, but would leave an indelible smell in the car for days.

Good times, good friends, good food, good fun!

Summertime Sunday at the Loop. The rink is gone, but the memories continue to bring Jo joy.

Remember the song, “God’s not dead; He’s still alive”.  He thoroughly loves when we have fun.

    • Proverbs 15:13 A happy heart makes a face cheerful.
    • Proverbs 17:22 A joyful hear is good medicine.

We have a few more weeks of summer.  Find a ways to have and make memories.

Now, a blessing to the all family members who receive this message and then some

I speak the name, Jesus

You are power, love, and prosperity

I speak Jesus over my family
