Humble Ambition

If you remember the hey day for prime-time soaps when shows Like “Dallas”, “Dynasty” and now “Bridgerton”, “Severance”, “Power”, “Empire”, and “Billions”.  The common theme in each of these is that all the players in the shows are rich.  Storylines for the most part focused on power.  Money was the secondary motivation in the shows.

This week, I was negotiating a request from one of our business partners.  I settled on terms that my boss will need to approve.  One of my reports was not happy with the terms and internalized the results because the person felt they should have done the negotiations to arrive at the same outcome.

After an extensive time of discussing what was done and getting this person’s feedback and feelings.  I finally said “I am done. I am getting angry”.    The person stopped talking and calmed down enough to conduct a poised conversation.

I mentioned the conversation to one of my colleagues. Both of us came to the same conclusion, this person really is bent on power and not the right result that benefits the employees and more importantly, the residents we serve.  I told my colleague I am not wired that way even though one of Strength Finders strengths is “Competitor”.

The Bible addresses those who seek to control others for the need of power and not mutual positive outcomes.  James 3:13-18:

13 If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. 15 For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. 16 For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.

17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. 18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.

Power without wisdom, humility, and love is recipe for resentment for many including the power broker.

 Good Son-Day - The Start of  Something New Ice Creameisters! Live Roses The day after Christmas, I got a call from a former co-worker I had connected with for about a year or so. I started the conversation by asking about her grandchild and two daughters. I proceeded to ask her how her husband was doing and got an unexpected quick but poignant answer: "Oh, he's doing fine; we're getting a divorce."  Wait, what! This couple was married for 30-plus years.  The husband is retired. Nice home in the burbs,  Both children are college grads.  Empty nesters. The American Dream. What happened?
