The Intangible Asset

Luke 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and goodwill toward men who rest in His favor. 

As part of a CEU, I enrolled into, yet another accounting course.  One of the terms you will encounter in an accounting course is “goodwill”.  From an accounting perspective, the term means,  when a business is acquired, a buyer pays more than the market value of the business’ identifiable assets and liabilities (i.e., debts). The amount that is paid in excess is known as goodwill.

Unlike tangible assets such as buildings and equipment, goodwill is an intangible asset. It cannot be sold separately from the business.  The value of goodwill for a business can be hard to define as it doesn’t generate any money per se.  Apple, Mercedes Benz, Macy’s, Gabberts, . . . etc., have a brand name that has goodwill.  People see value in it.  They trust it and will pay more for it.  It is considered an asset.  Goodwill is good to have in a business.

In Luke 2:14, God has an unlimited supply of goodwill stored up for you.  The Word says so and you know He is good for His Word.  God wants pass on this vast asset of His peace and favor to you under the condition that He is pleased with you.  Rest means there is not a lot of work to be in His good grace.

 Good Son-Day - The Start of  Something New Ice Creameisters! Live Roses The day after Christmas, I got a call from a former co-worker I had connected with for about a year or so. I started the conversation by asking about her grandchild and two daughters. I proceeded to ask her how her husband was doing and got an unexpected quick but poignant answer: "Oh, he's doing fine; we're getting a divorce."  Wait, what! Recently, I sat in on a conversation with some employees outside one of our buildings.  The conversation turned to a Minneapolis suburb called "Blaine".  They talked about the vivid dichotomy between the impoverished trailer parks and the lavish homes in the new developments.  I then cringed when I heard them refer to the people residing in the trailer homes as "White Trailer Trash" and this was uttered by a person of the same color.
