My Priscilla!
The title may imply that I have a side chick. To be clear, that is the furthest thing from the truth. Title is referencing a woman bearing that name in the New Testament. She was married to a missionary named Aquila. By trade they were tentmakers. The Apostle Paul was a tentmaker too. Together, they were one of the first missionaries to hit the field.
In Acts, Priscilla’s New Testament contributions are pretty lofty. She is held equal standing with her husband in the accounts of their work in the book Acts; which is significant in a time of a male dominated society. She mentored fledging saints like Apollos on the deeper truths of the Lord.
Acts 18:24-26
"Meanwhile, a certain Jew named Apollos arrived in Ephesus. He was a native of Alexandria and was well-educated and effective in his use of the scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord and spoke as one stirred up by the Spirit. He taught accurately the things about Jesus, even though he was aware only of the baptism John proclaimed and practiced.
"He began speaking with confidence in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they received him into their circle of friends and explained to him God’s way more accurately."
The Apostle Paul acknowledges Priscilla and Acquila multiple times in the New Testament.
For their selfless commitment to the people of the church
Romans 16:3-4, Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.
For conducting church services in their home
1 Corinthians 16:19, The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Priscilla greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at their house.
Priscilla became an elder in the early church. An early First Lady of sorts. Additionally, she is thought by some to be the anonymous author of the Epistle to the Hebrews.
My Priscilla is Josephine. She tirelessly works hand-in-hand in the ministry with her husband. She gave her all to the people of the ministry. She held services in her home for an infant church. She mentors saints young and old. She is a psalmist and playwright. She is a former first lady.
She does all this first because she loves the Lord. Second, she has a transcending love for our journey to fulfill God’s plan for our lives and marriage.
It should be clearly stated and quite apparent to anyone that anything good and wonderful happening in my life is due to the impactful love of God and Jo on my life.
The Apostle Peter speaks about powerful wives in this passage . . .
1 Peter 3:2-5
Let them see how pure you are. Let them see that your lives are full of respect for God. Fancy hairstyles don’t make you beautiful. Wearing gold jewelry or fine clothes doesn’t make you beautiful. Instead, your beauty comes from inside you. It is the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Beauty like this doesn’t fade away. God places great value on it. This is how the holy women of the past used to make themselves beautiful. They put their hope in God.
Jo embodies this passage (and Gorgeous has the outward beauty too).
This is my way of saying Happy 43rd Anniversary, to the divinely Honorable Josephine (My Priscilla) Jackson.
