Memorializing the Very Best in Your Life

On the last day of 2023, I am seeing in the Strib, CNN, USA Today, etc articles about famous people who departed from this world into the next such as:

Richard Roundtree, DJ Casper, Rudolph Isley, Tina Turner, Bob Barker, Hary Belafonte, Andre Brauger, Jim Brown, Jerry Springer, Al Jaffee, dick Butkus, Brooks Robinson, Tom Smothers, Vida Blue, Willis Reed, Lance Reddick, Bud Grant, Robert Blake, Richard Belzer, Stella Stevens, Tim McCarver, Bobby Hull, Cindy Williams, David Crosby, Gina Lollobrigida, Fred White, Requel Welch, Pee Wee Herman, David McCallum, Lisa Marie Presley, Alan Arkin, Ryan O’Neal, Sandrea Day O’Connor, Jim Hines, Tony Bennett, Henry Kissinger, Marty Kroft, Rosalynn Carter, Bobby Knight, Matthew Perry, Susanne Sommers, Burt Bacharach, Norman Lear,  Sinead O’Connor…etc.  StarTribune and CNN

How many of these people do you remember? As you look at the names and the summaries for each person, you think about their accomplishments, and in many cases quite fondly.  They did something for the betterment of mankind or entertained you.  You either agreed with them, sang or danced to their songs, or marveled at their art form.

Our Creator has done this with you and more.  He wants you to take a moment to memorialize His accomplishments in your life.  For some of you, He saved you from impending doom.  Some of us He gave us a vision and life in all its fullness John 10:10.

Jacob took a moment to physically memorialize God’s accomplishment in his life.  Stay with me on this passage. It’s a little longer than I normally post, but the context is good.  It is about Jacob’s Ladder and the first memorial.

Genesis 28:10-22

10 Jacob left Beersheba and went to Haran. 11 The sun had already set when he came to a good place to spend the night. He took a rock there and laid his head on it to sleep. 12 Jacob had a dream. He dreamed there was a ladder that was on the ground and reached up into heaven. He saw the angels of God going up and down the ladder. 13 And then Jacob saw the Lord standing by the ladder. He said, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham. I am the God of Isaac. I will give you the land that you are lying on now. I will give this land to you and to your children. 14 You will have as many descendants as there are particles of dust on the earth. They will spread east and west, north and south. All the families on earth will be blessed because of you and your descendants.

15 “I am with you, and I will protect you everywhere you go. I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised.”

16 Then Jacob woke up and said, “I know that the Lord is in this place, but I did not know he was here until I slept.”

17 Jacob was afraid and said, “This is a very great place. This is the house of God. This is the gate to heaven.”

18 Jacob got up very early in the morning. He took the rock he had slept on and set it up on its edge. Then he poured oil on the rock. In this way he made it a memorial to God. 19 The name of that place was Luz, but Jacob named it Bethel (i.e., The House of God)

20 Then Jacob made a promise. He said, “If God will be with me, and if he will protect me on this trip, and if he gives me food to eat and clothes to wear, 21 and if I return in peace to my father’s house—if he does all these things—then the Lord will be my God. 22 I am setting this stone up as a memorial stone. It will show that this is a holy place for God, and I will give God one-tenth of all he gives me.

An example of memorializing God’s impact on your life is established here.  Deuteronomy 8:18 Remember the Lord your God is the one who gives you power to do these things. HE does this because HE wants to keep the agreement that HE made with your ancestors, as HE is doing TODAY!

Moreover, He wants you to share what He has done in your life.  In Old Testament times, you see a repeated pattern of where an entire generation has forgotten the one who saved and blessed them.  The speed of forgetting God happens fast.  The enemy does not waste time filling in a gap where the elder generation does not share stories of the Bible to the next.  Remember the enemy comes in sheep’s clothing to steal, kill, and destroy (Mathew 7:15, John 10:10).

The lost importance of teaching young people about biblical characters and miraculous feats of God is fading.  For those of us who are the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, and Generation X, we were taught or forced fed biblical foundations and scripture memorization.  Now teaching young people about God is about concepts and practical living to make the Bible more relative to the newer generations. I get that; however, the old school approach is practical too.  A balance is needed.

In recent conversations with those generations who are Millennials, Z, and Alpha, I am finding some have knowledge about Christmas, but not Christ.  They do not know anything about Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Ruth, Esther, David, Ezekiel, Daniel, Peter, John, and Paul.

It is our responsibility to relay stories about these famous people like CNN and the Strib did.  Much of what is in the Bible was transmitted by oral tradition over hundreds, if not thousands of years.

Psalm 96:3  Declare (i.e., orally tell)  HIS Glory among the nations, HIS marvelous works among all peoples!  Remember whoever share your knowledge of God will be blessed with a dose of faith in hearing what you have to say because faith come by hearing (Romans 10:17)

2 Thessalonians 2:15 With all these things in mind, dear brothers and sisters, stand firm and keep a strong grip on the teaching we passed on you both in person and by letter.

A resolution for this coming year, teach your children both old school and new age biblical characters, scriptures, and miraculous stories.  Give to the new generations the gems we cling  to and make our lives rich in the privilege of being sons and daughters of God. Spread the joy. Spread the wealth!

Song of the Week.  Hallelujah! Sing a New Song to GOD. Sing HIS praise in the assembly of godly people. Psalm 149:1

"Good to Me",
2023, Wesley Harris featuring Shirlvin Desir and Alex Bingham.

Another Holy Hip Hop song with understandable lyrics with a smooth current edge.

Lyrics - Good to Me

Have you ever met a love like

Have you ever met a love like

Running from the club nights

Radiant like the sun light

Cua you rescued me, like a scene from the Dark Knight

City of Gotham, but you gave me life

I was stuck in a coffin

Tried on my own

I was so exhausted

Gave it all for the keys of bondage

Freed me

That's why I call Yahweh

Set up blessing like blind dates

Whoa

On my Stevie Wonder that's blind faith

Brought me far

You can see from the time scape

The enemy was throwing them stones at my door

But you never left

You helped me in war

Peace...be still

I won't fear the storm

Lay la la

Oh, Lay, lay, tah tan

Jesus you're good to m

You're so good to me

Lay la la

Oh, Lay, lay, tah tan

Jesus you're good to m

You're so good to me

My wonderful God

You're good to me

So good to me

Oh yeah

Oh yeah

Tell me how You delight in me

How you always see the light in me

That's Christ in me

And He said He won't lie to me

Even though I got scars like Lion King

Plus you know what I been through

Money low, but the rent due

Just in time

When He com through

Doo dah, dah

Making all things look brand new

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

You making everything  brand new

I was down on my own

All I had was you

I fighting with the demons

But you cam and you

Made a way through

Every day

Feeling like I'm in a maze

Trying to find my way

Gotta put my trust in you

Gotta put my trust in you

Gotta pu my trust in. . .

Lay la la

Oh, Lay, lay, tah tan

Jesus you're good to m

You're so good to me

Gotta pu my trust in. . .

Oh, Lay, lay, tah tan

Jesus you're good to m

You're so good to me

My wonderful God

You're good to me

So good to me

Oh yeah

Oh yeah

You're good to me

So good to me

Oh yeah

Oh yeah

Keys to the Kingdom, Yahweh

Peace in the blood of my life

Thanks to You it's nothing

To love You deep is my birthright

Trust Your Spirit, my God when . . .

The storms of life they no act right

Peace be still, You're so good God

Peace be still, You're so good God

You're good to me

So good to me

Oh yeah
