FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PEOPLE: YADAH!  THE MAGNITUDE OF YOUR PRAISE

I am one of at least 8 people in my family who are PKs.  A good portion of our minor years was spent in the house of God in some form or fashion.  In that time, while prepping for the Sunday service or in the service, you would hear some church jargon.

One term that was very fashionable, in the late nineties was was "High Praise".  It was a term used ambiguously.  Some used it as a way to say there was a special dispensation cast on the service when everyone was worshipping in unison and others used it as way to describe a style of singing or song.

What is High Praise?  I suspect the term comes from Psalms 149:6, "Let the high praises of God be in their mouths".

You know me, I am going to get the context of this passage. So, here it is.  It literally means singing from your throat in Hebrew text.  You might say, "Well duh!!???"  Okay, a little more context.  The thought behind the phrase was to sing the songs sublimely (i.e., lofty, grand) and loudly.   This was typically done with dancing as well.  It was "Thriller!" with a divine and holy twist.   They honored the LORD this way because they were about to execute an infailable plan of the MOST HIGH. Something we do everyday. There is an importance, a dignity, an elevation to high praise.

In the past, I discussed the word “halal” the root of hallelujah. When the Hebrews heard “halal,” their understanding was to celebrate with exuberance, clamorous, loud, to boast about the LORD! It was intended to be intense. Psalm 150 uses halal in every verse 2-3 times. Another time it is used is in Ezra 3:10-13 (see below).  In my Charleston Hesston voice . . . Behold the magnitude of their praise and the power therein!

Ezra 3:10-13

The builders laid the foundation of the Lord’s temple. Then the priests came. They were wearing their special clothes. They brought their trumpets with them. The Levites who belonged to the family line of Asaph also came. They brought their cymbals with them. The priests and Levites took their places to praise the Lord. They did everything just as King David had required them to.  They sang to the Lord. They praised him. They gave thanks to him. They said,

“The Lord is good.

His faithful love to Israel continues forever.”

All the people gave a loud shout. They praised the Lord. They were glad because the foundation of the Lord’s temple had been laid.  But many of the older priests and Levites and family leaders wept out loud. They had seen the first temple. So when they saw the foundation of the second temple being laid, they wept. Others shouted with joy. No one could tell the difference between the shouts of joy and the sounds of weeping. That’s because the people made so much noise. The sound was heard far away.

Another Hebrew word for praise is “YADAH.” It means to use the hand, especially to revere and worship, so when the Hebrews would hear this “praise” in worship (i.e., Ps. 139:14), they would physically worship by using, clapping, or raising their hands. It was a physical action as well as with the mouth. . .again.

We have no problem cheering and shouting out loud at a concert or a match-up of some of our favorite sports teams; so, let's do the same for the Lord.  Last scripture provides a daily reason for YADAH.  It was used this scripture.

Psalm 139:14

How you made me is amazing and wonderful.

I praise (YADAH) you for that.

What you have done is wonderful.

    I know that very well.

Worthy is the Lamb Lyrics

Worthy is the Lamb slain, eternal life to gain.
We worship You, Lord as King.

Worthy is the Lamb slain, eternal life to gain.
We worship You, Lord as King.

He who was slain to receive honor,
To Him we give glory and receive honor and praise.

He who was slain to receive honor,
To Him we give glory and receive honor and praise.

Worthy is the Lamb slain...
Worthy is the Lamb slain...
Worthy is the Lamb slain...

Eternal life to gain, we worship You, Lord as King.
Eternal life to gain, we worship You, Lord as King.
Eternal life to gain, we worship You, Lord as King.
