Storm Chaser
Good Son-Day on a Monday!!!
Melodies of MLK Jr. Day
Storm Chaser
Over the weekend, I had two opportunities to celebrate the MLK Jr holiday. It started on Sunday. At halftime of the, currently in first place, Timberwolves game, I was able to capture footage of the “Sounds of Blackness”. Today, I joined nearly 3,000 people at the 34th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The speakers and entertainers at both events were spectacular.
I find it very satisfying that our country has a holiday that honors a reverend. He is most noted for non-violent approach to gaining equity and peace in our still divided country.
Dr. Martin would go places storming with violence and hate. Each one of his demonstrations easily put his and his followers' lives on the line for the sake of peace. I would say he did so fearlessly, but let’s be real, we have all seen the footage of the intense hate that included the fire hoses, the German Shepherds, the billy clubs, and the beat downs. If you survived that, you had to deal with the late night drive-by of a Molotov Cocktail tossed into your living room, or multiple lead projectiles whizzing through your bedroom. They completed the demonstrations anyway. Pure definition of courage.
Facing all this violence without a means of protection or retaliation, required a person of immense charisma and leadership skills to convince throngs of people of the ultimate outcome... peace and equality.
The outcome changed the world in terms of a better appreciation of the demonstration goals. The demonstrations had some success in changing the lives of oppressed people. Yes, more is needed nearly 60 years removed from the demonstrations.
At this morning’s breakfast, I heard wonderful speeches about how we still need to speak out about oppression and not repeating horrors of the past (e.g., book burnings/bannings in Florida that is supported by their governor and legislature).
Jesus was a storm chaser; He would go places where His life would be put on the line with similar goals in mind…peace, equality, and love.
Luke 9:51-59
51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for Him; 53 but the people there did not welcome Him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then He and his disciples went to another village.
57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to Him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”
Even within Israel there was hate between real Jews and wannabe Jews (Samaritans). Prejudice is not new. On the road back in those days, they would stone each other. So the mortal danger to Christ walking out in the open was real. He knew that, yet He still traveled by foot on treacherous roads. The result was someone found their way to Him. That person found love, hope, and peace.
On the last word, peace, those who promote it shall be called the children of God.
Matthew 5:9, God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.
As my way of paying homage to another reverend, Happy Birthday Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Child of God. May we take some pieces of your courage and promote peace and equality for others.

Lyrics Eyes On You
Listen, we can run this race, if keep our eyes on Jesus.
The author and finisher of our faith, Jesus.
Your name be praised.

I’ll keep my eyes on you
For you are the light and truth
And I will not let this word slip from my heart
Jesus you bled and died
Now all of creation testifies
Jesus rose, your name be praised
Jesus rose, your name be praised
