Fact-Finding about Halloween

And It's Not My Birthday
Fact-Finding about Halloween
With Halloween occurring on Thursday, I wanted to offer an opinion piece on a holiday that has been controversial for many believers.
The Origins of Halloween
Halloween has its roots in Samhain. It was a 2,000-year-old Celtic festival held on November 1. It marked the end of the harvest season and beginning of winter or "darker half" of the year. It also is the Irish name for November. Celebrations began on the evening of 31 October, since the Celtic day began and ended at sunset. It also was a time associated with death (leaves falling and plants dying) and the thinning of the veil between the living and the dead
The tradition of wearing costumes on Halloween has its roots in Samhain, where people believed that the boundaries between the living and the dead blurred on this night. To ward off evil spirits, people would disguise themselves to blend in or scare them away. Over time, this practice evolved into the fun and festive tradition we know today.
Keep in mind, 2,000 years ago, Christianity was in its infancy stages and like much of the world, Ireland was a pagan land. People worshipped idols and performed pagan rituals as a part of their religion.
The Irish people were reliant on their priest to guide them through their religion. The priests were called Druids. They were highly respected members of society, serving as religious leaders, teachers, judges, and advisors.
What you need to know about the mysterious Druids
- Role and Responsibilities: Druids were responsible for performing religious rituals, interpreting omens, and providing spiritual guidance. They were also skilled in law, medicine, and astronomy.
- Knowledge and Learning: Druids were known for their extensive knowledge of the natural world and the cosmos. They often gathered in sacred groves to study and meditate.
- Mystery and Secrecy: Much about the Druids remains shrouded in mystery. They were often secretive about their practices and beliefs, and their knowledge was considered sacred.
Despite what you see in movies, they did not worship evil spirits or the fallen angel. They did worship multiple gods. Again, no different than the rest of world. Again, Christianity had not spread to Ireland yet.
Now my humble opinion.
I do not think the intent of people on Halloween is to worship or honor the fallen angel. Based on what I said above, wearing costumes actually was done to ward off evil spirits. Today, wearing costumes is just for fun. Sorry I am not going to get any deeper than that.
My only caution, anything remotely related to honoring the fallen angel (e.g., witches, warlocks . . . etc.), is something I would not do or allow my child to do.
Why? ---- God specifically calls out witchcraft as sin and that is enough for me not to flirt with any alliance with witchcraft. Just saying and my opinion.
1 Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the Word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king.”
Truth be told, the roots of the Christmas festival are based in a pagan festival called Saturnalia, which was an ancient Roman festival held in mid-December to honor the god Saturn (the god of agriculture and time). It was a week-long celebration filled with feasting, and gift-giving,
Obviously, we are not worshipping Saturn as a god anymore. Our intent on Christmas is to honor the birth of Christ. God knows our heart and intent.
My thought, let the kiddos wear costumes. Stay away from things that have bad intent as mentioned above. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you.
For all, be safe out there on Thursday.
We have come to sing our praises
We come to pray our prayers
And we hail from different cares
We are rich and poor. Young and old
From all around the world
Come on everybody
Let's have church
It is more than brick and stone
It is more than just a feeling
It is more than just a song
We're the house of God, on Christ the Rock
His kingdom on the earth
Come everbody
Let's have church
Did anyone bring a song
Can someone give a testimony
Pray the don't talk too long
Preacher is gonna preach a sermon
And revival's gonna come
We invite you Holy Spirit
Have your way in us
Amen, amen
It's good to be here today
Amen, amen
