Live Roses
The day after Christmas, I got a call from a former co-worker I had connected with for about a year or so. I started the conversation by asking about her grandchild and two daughters. I proceeded to ask her how her husband was doing and got an unexpected quick but poignant answer: "Oh, he's doing fine; we're getting a divorce." Wait, what!
This couple was married for 30-plus years. The husband is retired. Nice home in the burbs, Both children are college grads. Empty nesters.
The American Dream.
What happened?
I did not pry. The only thing she offered was, "One day, I was sitting at the dining room table. He sat directly across from me. I looked at him. I said to myself I can't do this anymore. I knew then I needed to file for a divorce."
The news sent me for a spin. At first, I thought he must have cheated, or he spent too much time at his cabin up north. My second thought was none of that matters now. I must check to see how she is doing, which I did. She said, "I am doing better now."
I could see the relief on her face.
Her set of circumstances reinforced my approach to my marriage, which is CQI, a business term that means continuous quality improvement. That is, do not get so content with anyone you love that you take them for granted, pay them no attention, or even be abusive verbally or mentally. Love her better with each passing day.
Your negative actions will erode any semblance of a relationship over time. And when the loved one opts out of the relationship, you think you can recover by expressing a way too-late measure of appreciation and love.
At funerals, people show their appreciation for the departed with bouquets of roses and other flowers. You hear testimonies about the dearly departed. On the way home from a funeral repast, my dad would often say "Dead noses do not smell live roses." It was his way of saying... love the ones you are with a profound passion now. Clearly let them know. There may be a point where you can't, and you will regret it.
Hebrews 13:16
Make sure you don’t take things for granted and go slack in working for the common good; share what you have with others. God takes particular pleasure in acts of worship – a different kind of “sacrifice” – that take place in the home and workplace and on the streets.
If you are looking for a New Year's resolution, here is a suggestion, look for ways to add to your love with someone in a tangible way. Tell them how much you love them repeatedly. One day, that person or persons can pick a daisy and count the ways you loved them.
Song of the Week - Hallelujah! Sing a New Song to GOD. Sing HIS praise in the assembly of godly people. Psalm 149:1.
Hold On 2 Your Faith. 2024, Deitrick Haddon and Voices Unity (featuring Damita and Tasha Page-Lockhart)
To be honest, I selected this song because I saw two familiar names in Deitrick and Damita. Both are from Detroit. A lot of good gospel comes out of Motown. This song has a soulful shrill that makes you move with the bass foundation.
Somebody Got To Me
Um Um Um Um Um
Yeah Yeah Yeah
You Got To Hold On
Hold On
You Got To Hold On
Hold On
You Got To Hold On
Hold On
Yeah Yeah Yeah
You Got To Keep The Faith
You Got To Stay In The Race
You Got To Believe
Then And Only You Can Receive
You Got To Trust In No Man
There's No Other Way
I've Got To I've Got To Hold On
I Got To I've Got To Hold On
Hold On
Hold On
Hold On
Say Hold On My Brother
Say Hold On My Sister
If You Could Look Through The Eyes Of Faith
Surely God Will Make A Way
Hold On
Keep On Believing
Keep On Believing
Keep On Receiving
Say Keep On Receiving
Say You Can Trust Him
Say You Can Trust Him
Say I Don't Have No Doubt
Say I Don't Have No Doubt
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Hold On
