Great is My Portion
Yesterday, Jo, Andy, and I made the 50-mile pilgrimage from Brooklyn to Saint Cloud, Minnesota, to fish at the hydroelectric dam sitting on the mighty Mississippi River. And mighty is being generous these days. What we found was a river that looked like it had gone on a diet — low levels, sandbars scattered everywhere, and anglers literally walking in the middle of the river. Global warming is not se202nding subtle messages.
Our species of choice? The scrappy smallmouth bass — river tuna, as we call them. We'd happily settle for a Northern Pike, those sleek, toothy wolves of the river current.
We arrived at 8 AM, fished until 1 PM, and between the three of us, managed to persuade exactly one smallmouth bass to cooperate. One. The fish were apparently observing a day of rest.
Unfruitful? Yes. Interesting? Absolutely.
The 50-minute ride home required a single, dignified sip of 5-Hour Energy — just enough to get me home upright. The plan: a quick nap, then prep a two-pound chuck roast for the smoker.
But plans, as they say, are what make God smile.
Just as I headed toward my mailbox, two neighboring siblings, Paul and David, materialized in my driveway. Their agenda? The Minnesota Timberwolves. Now, I should mention that in 28 years of living near these gentlemen, our entire communication history consisted of a "Hey!" and an obligatory wave, usually as I was either pulling in or pulling out of my garage.
Normally, sports talk is pure joy. But at this particular moment, I wanted nothing more than to put my feet up. Yet there I stood, fielding questions about players and the LaMelo Ball trade for a solid 20 minutes. I was tired, but apparently fluent.
As we wrapped up, Paul looked at me and said, "It's easy talking to you. Every time I see you, you're always smiling and greeting us. You're always happy. That's because you are a minister, right?"
Suddenly, the fatigue evaporated.
My answer: "Great is my portion."
I followed with, "Happiness comes with the package."
They laughed and headed home. And I stood there, grateful.
Your portion is just like mine. You inherited it the moment you became a believer. The word portion in Hebrew translates as inheritance, and what an inheritance it is.
Ephesians 3:6And this is God's plan: Both Gentiles and Jews who believe the Good News share equally in the riches inherited by God's children. Both are part of the same body, and both enjoy the promise of blessings because they belong to Christ Jesus.
That inheritance includes the Kingdom of God, with every blessing attached to it.
Matthew 25:34Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.'
And here's what seals it: this is entirely the gift of God's grace. Our sufficiency — the state of having everything we truly need — flows from Him alone.
2 Corinthians 3:5Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.
In other words, great is our portion.
2 Corinthians 12:9And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power works best in weakness." So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.
Saturday, not one fin graced my hands. But I was treated to something far better, a witness from neighbors about the joy they could see on my face, a reflection of a portion I didn't earn and can never lose. How graceful.
That's the Good News. And you'll always find it here.
